Daranee: Release 'protectors of democracy'

"Release the protectors of democracy," is the message political prisoner Daranee Charncherngsilapakul, 49, is sending to prime minister-in-waiting Yingluck Shinawatra from the Central Women's Correctional Institution.

Daranee - also known as Da Torpedo - told her 57-year-old brother Kittichai Charncherngsilapakul on Friday to write down her key message for the Pheu Thai top-gun, whose election to parliament was cleared by the Election Commission on Tuesday.

"I would like to congratulate Ms Yingluck for being overwhelmingly chosen by the Thai people in the July 3 general election, and I hope that she quickly restores the democracy that was stolen by the coup in 2006," she said, according to her brother.

banmebkk D16 - "Even though some PT MPs are charged with Lese Majeste, they are not setenced, and have constantly be allowed bail on and off. Why does the PT MPs get special treament over an ordinary PT supporter?"
There are no PTP MPs accused of LM that are currently out on bail.

This just shows how unfair the law is. Even though some PT MPs are charged with Lese Majeste, they are not setenced, and have constantly be allowed bail on and off. Why does the PT MPs get special treament over an ordinary PT supporter?

@D5 - well said. She is calling out the wrong person. She needs to focus her attentionn on the corrupted government officials that change the laws for their own benefit, and steal tax-payers money. I hope she doesn't refer to those people as the "protectors of democracy", she got her priorities wrong thats why doesn't see who the protectors of democracy really are.

I fully support Daranee Charncherngsilapakul in her fight for freedom of speech.

"Daranee was sentenced to 18 years jail because of her public remarks about the royal family..."

In today's England, this never happens, but Queen Elizabeth II still lives joyfully and beloved by the citizens.

Yesterday redshirt leader Thida Thawornseth said: "no one should be worried that the red shirts will do any damage". Another protector of democracy? LOL.

Maybe her detention is under less than ideal conditions, but so is the detention of most prisoners in Thailand. And as with most stories told to the media, I am sure there is a bit of exaggeration and sympathy oriented wording, to make it sound worse. Ultimately the Thailand justice system needs some overhauling, but ... she broke a law that was on the books, so she is subject to being held and charged. Until the law is changed she is subject to its penalties. And as long as she keeps filing appeals and can't pay the bail, then she will remain incarcerated.

But "defender of democracy", give me a break, bad mouthing the royal family and calling for street anarchy is not defending democracy, forcing a country to abide by the ideas of a rowdy group is the beginning of dictatorship, not democracy.

There are currently 112 people in prison for LM offences. I'd also call on YS to unblock the censored internet asap.

"She also faces another 50,000 baht fine for defamation under a suit filed by Manager Media owner Sondhi Limthongkul."
I thought Sondhi said defamation suits are anti-democratic?

I don't think anyone in Thailand can claim to follow the principals of Buddhism. You can witness this by simply sitting in a car driven by a Thai person. The selfishness is beyond anything I've ever seen.

If calling for murder and anarchy is what Democracy is, then, IMHO, forget it.

Like Natthawut and Jatulown, she does not to know the difference between a call for anarchy, a call of contempt against all noble institutions in Thailand , a call to violence and arson and the term " democracy" She does not even know the beginning of the word democracy so she is where she belongs; in jail, and hopefully for the full 18 years!

She is jailed because she is not wealthy. Wealthy convicts could still go to Beijing Olympic after the sentencing and is now enjoying life at Dubai. She is jailed because she is not a listed Pheu Thai MP. Even being held by the authority, JP is looking forward to take up the post awaiting EC's declaration. So please note that if anyone, who has not a bit of wealth, do not be stupid by talking too much in Thailand. Clear?
