EC endorses final poll winners

House set to open for business on Monday

The Election Commission yesterday cleared the way for the House of Representatives to convene after it endorsed a batch of 94 poll winners as MPs, while still refusing to lift its suspension of red-shirt core leader Jatuporn Prompan.

With the elections of 496 MPs affirmed, which exceeds the required number of 475, the House is on track to open for business within 30 days of the election as required by the constitution.

The first session is expected to be held on Monday.

D1-D8: Any analogies to the EC and its machinations in the US, Oz, or any other western democracy?

@hillfarang - As a Thai I can proudly say that this is not a proud moment for Thailand. I am not proud to have politicians that incited violence and called for protesters to burn the city down. But many red supporters have claimed, as long as its good for the citizens no harm done, I disagree.

I am not a strong supporter of the PT or the DEM as I see many flaws that has yet to be fix. There are very few politicians who can command any respect, most of the goods ones retired early or are dead.

discussion 3, every comment is to be respected but I cannot agree with your "proud moment for Thailand" ...On the contrary, putting people like Natthawut in parliament is a sad day for any decent Thai citizen who still has a minimum of respect for the law and the Institutions....

Would be interesting to understand how big a problem we still have - are the whole 94 still under investigation or did some of them now join the list of 402 where investigation complete and good to go? Can BP find out and publish if available? Hopefully it is a small number so we do not have a running sore of red and yellow cards over the next year or so

BP : publishing the names of the EC commissioners who voted against releasing Jatu seems to set them up to being intimidated.

Your reporter could have given the names of the two who voted for him and the reasons why they did this. I think many would be more interested to know these reasons.

I think it is a safe bet that some Reds will now harass the 3 named EC commissioners demanding "red justice" meaning give them what they want.

"The first [house] session is expected to be held on Monday."

Despite the many cries of "foul", the EC has done its job on time. This is a proud moment for Thailand and will now hopefully allow the elected government to govern. As I have posted previously, honeymoons are brief, but important. YS now needs to assemble a skilled, hard-working and loyal cabinet. She needs to begin to address the economy, Cambodian border issue, relationship with the military, etc. Reconciliation & amnesty should come slower./ She does not need to give any reason for people to take to the streets. I wish her well!

If the EC fails to ratify Jatiporn lets see who gets out of jail first the EC or Jatiporn after the smoke clears.

It is time to heal the wounds and to unify all the Thais regarddless to their colors. Thus,Jatuporn Prumpan should be endorsed by the the EC. JP was accused and framed as a red-shirt terrorist by his bloody rivals (Abhisit's members).
