Yingluck wants quick vote for House speaker

The election of the House speaker and deputy speakers should be completed on Tuesday so the next government can start working as soon as possible, Pheu Thai Party's candidate for prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra said on Friday.

Ms Yingluck said candidates for the positions would be nominated on Monday when the House convenes for the first time since the general election.

The prime minister-designate said she will have to coordinate with the Secretariat of the House of Representatives to speed up the election process.

"I have a candidate for the House speaker's position in mind and there have been no negotiations between MPs from different groups on this issue.

"I believe no problems will arise but there are other positions available if a candidate is not chosen," said the youngest sister of fugitive former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

The candidates for House speaker, the ex-officio parliament president, and the two deputies are reported to be Somsak Kiatsuranont, Col Apiwan Wiriyachai and Witthaya Buranasiri.

About 20 supporters of the red-shirt United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship gathered outside the Pheu Thai's headquarters on Friday afternoon, calling on all party members to support Mr Apiwan as the new House speaker.

Extraordinary how some Thaksin apologists vehemently deny any direct correlation between Pheu Thaksin Party and the UDD/Red Shirts, then in the next breath are telling us all that, really, the parliament now largely belongs to the Red Shirts because it was them that put PTP in power.

My feeling is that some here take this out of context. Thailand has been under a caretaker government with little or no powers since the election call. My take is that Yingluck wants to start running the country as soon as possible and why not. Getting down to business rather than dragging your feet is not "frenetic urgency" as Geoff states it's needed at the moment.

Disc 3 - "Thai Parliament or red shirt?" In a way both. Although many discounted the number of red supporters for up to a year prior to the election there was then and are now a large number of them who voted for the PTP.

Yingluk wants quick this and quick that and quick everything.

Call me a cynic but this frenetic urgency harks back to her brothers ( I will do it in 30 days ) plans which always failed. Perhaps he is nagging at her from dawn to dusk.

By doing this she is showing naivety and not mature leadership-not a good start at all.

Oh! Col.Apiwan is the most suitable House Speaker because he is a staunch supporter of the red shirt? So who's parliament is this? Thai Parliament or red shirt?
