The Appeals Court has sentenced a musician to one year in prison, suspended for two years, and handed him a fine of 4,500 baht for spray-painting an anarchy symbol on a sign outside the Criminal Court in 2015.

Natthapol Khemngern, 23, was arrested on May 25, 2015.

The court heard that footage from a surveillance camera in front of the court showed him spray-painting the anarchy symbol, a black circle with an "A" on it, before and after the words "Criminal Court" on the court's nameplate on May 24, 2015.

He was charged with defacing public property and violating a sanitation law.

The Criminal Court sentenced him to two years imprisonment for damaging public property. Because of his confession, the sentence was reduced to one year without suspension.

Natthapol appealed.

In its judgement on Wednesday, the Appeals Court initially sentenced him to two years in jail and a fine of 9,000 baht. The sentence was then commuted to one year, with a two-year suspension, and the fine halved to 4,500 baht.

Natthapol is required to report to probation officials three times a year during the suspension and to complete 12 hours of community service.
