BURI RAM - The Department of Special Investigation is considering whether to take over a case of alleged encroachment involving more than 2,000 rai of a forest reserve in Satuk district planted in cash crops by investors.

A team of DSI investigators went to Khok Chod national forest reserve on Wednesday to inspect the area and questioned local people about the alleged encroachment.

Their visit followed complaints from residents of tambon Ronthong that some investors and other residents had illegally cut trees, cleared land and planted over 2,000 rai of the forest in cash crops such as rubber trees, sugar cane and cassava.

The complainants said they earlier lodged complaints with several state agencies, including tambon and district authorities, but there had been no progress in the case and the forest encroachment had continued for 10 years or more.

DSI investigator Jettana Hemmun said that after completing their inspection his team would submit their report to head office for a decision on whether to accept the complaint as a special case.

If accepted, a team would be set up to take action against the encroachers. If not, the DSI would coordinate with other agencies in handling the case, said Mr Jettana.
