Chulalongkorn University is best in class of Thai tertiary institutions

Chulalongkorn University has jumped into the top 50 and was again the No 1 Thai university in the latest Quacquarelli Symonds list of the best tertiary educational institutions in Asia.

In the latest QS Asian University Rankings, released last week, CU earned 69.80 out of 100 points, climbing from 53rd last year to 45th.

It remained the top Thai university for the ninth consecutive year.

QS ranks 920 universities from 17 countries in Asia in the list.

The second Thai institution on the list was Mahidol University, which was ranked 61st with 62.5 points.

Thammasat University ranked 101st with 47.4 points, narrowly ahead of Chiang Mai University in 104th place with 47 points.

Kasetsart University came in at 129th with 40.9 points, while King Mongkut's University of Technology Thonburi stood at 161st with 35 points.

Other Thai universities on the list were Khon Kaen University which was ranked 165th with 34.8 points and Prince of Songkla University which was ranked 185th with 31.8 points.

The National University of Singapore claimed the top spot overall for the third year running with 100 points, followed closely by the University of Hong Kong with 98.5 points.

Singapore's Nanyang Technological University, meanwhile, rose by one place to finish third with 98.4 points.

QS, a London-based education and career consultancy company, uses a similar methodology to create the Asian list as its world rankings, but with some additional indicators and adapted weightings.

This set of criteria, developed in consultation with regional experts and stakeholders, is designed to reflect key priorities for universities in Asia, drawing on as much available data as possible.

This year, QS has expanded the top Asian universities list to include the region's 350 best universities, 50 more than last year. It has also added another metric -- PhD holders among staff -- to add another dimension to its analyses.
