A motorcycle taxi driver on Friday returned 10,000 Swiss francs (360,000 baht) in cash to a Swiss man who accidentally dropped his wallet on Witthayu Road in Bangkok's Pathumwan district.
Yutthana Mainoi, 36, accompanied by his younger brother Sonthaya, went to the FM91 traffic radio station to return the wallet containing the cash to Daniel Kofmel, 45, and his Thai girlfriend Panawan Prommanas, 35.
Mr Yutthana said he saw the black wallet on Witthayu Road while riding his motorcycle past the Embassy of Switzerland on the way back to his motorcycle queue on Thursday.
He stopped to pick it up and returned to his bike queue. After checking it, he found many Swiss banknotes and 300 baht in cash in the wallet.
Mr Yutthana consulted his brother Sonthana, who was also a motorcycle taxi driver at the same queue. They then went to the FM 91 traffic radio station to seek help finding its owner.
"Initially, I didn't know how much 10,000 Swiss francs are worth in Thai baht. After checking the exchange rate at a website, I found the banknotes were worth 360,000 baht. I consulted my brother whether we should ask police to help find the owner. But my brother suggested I should contact FM91. We sympathised with a foreign tourist who had lost the wallet and we're worried he might be in trouble,'' said Mr Yutthana.
Ms Panawan said she and her Swiss boyfriend went to the embassy on Thursday to submit documents for their marriage registration. Upon arriving, they rushed to get out of a friend's car and did not realise the wallet was missing until after they submitted the papers and were about to have lunch.
The money was for wedding-party preparations, said the woman.
The couple then took a taxi to Lumpini station to file a complaint, but the driver suggested they contact the FM 91 traffic radio station.
The Swiss man gave a cash reward of 20,000 baht to the motorcycle taxi driver for his good deeds.
