Wooden walkway in old market collapses, injures tourists

SAMUT PRAKAN -- About 20 tourists fell into a canal, and two were injured, when a rickety wooden walkway inside a century-old marketplace in Bang Phli district collapsed on Sunday afternoon.

The market is located next to Wat Bang Phli Yai, also known as Wat Luang Pho To, a popular tourist destination.

A 10-metre long stretch of the wooden walkway over a canal beneath Blocks 108-109  collapsed about 2pm.

About 20 tourists fell into the water below, which was about one metre deep. A man and a woman were injured and admitted to Bang Phli Hospital.

Some of the tourists lost belongings when dumped so suddenly through the floor into the canal. 

Officials from the Tambon Bang Phli Municipality blocked off the damaged walkway, which was to be repaired on Monday. They the flooring was old and had been repaired from time to time, but it finally collapsed.
