A fire in a shop near Bangkok Transit System's On Nut station at the mouth of Soi Sukhumvit 81 forced the temporary closure of the station on Wednesday morning.

The fire started about 07.34am in a draper's shop located on Soi Sukhumvit 81 below On Nut station.

Flames from the burning shop spread quickly, sending smoke bolliowing over the walkway and platform of the station. BTS staff evacuated passengers waiting on the platform to the pavement below.  The station was closed for safety.

The fire was brought under control by 7.52am, and the station re-opened at 7.55am.

Although On Nut station itself was closed, the train service was otherwise unaffected

BTS director Anat Arbhabhirama said firemen had completely extinguished the blaze.  Police would investigate that cause. The extent of the damage to the shop and its stock was unknown.
