Australian man found dead in Phuket dorm room

PHUKET - A 30-year-old Australian tourist was found dead inside a room in Muang district on Wednesday morning.

The man was found lying face-up on a bed inside the room on the second floor of a dormitory in tambon Rawai when Pol Lt Chanat Hongsittichaikul, deputy investigation chief at Chalong police station, and officers arrived. His name is being withheld until his relatives are informed.

The incident was reported at about 10am on Wednesday, Manager Online said.

The man was wearing only black trousers and there were no signs of a struggle in the room, police said.

The officers believed the man died at least three days before he was discovered.

Staff at the dormitory told police they last saw the tourist leaving the room to practise boxing on July 17. On Wednesday morning, a tenant living next door to the tourist alerted staff to a foul odour. The staff subsequently found the man dead.

His body was sent to Vachira Phuket Hospital for a post-mortem examination to determine cause of death.

Police are investigating and are in contact with the Australian embassy.
