KALASIN - Two teenagers were allegedly hired by a 16-year-old friend to kill his father, but botched the job and the man survived with severe knife wounds.

The son was later caught, and admitted hiring the two youths to murder his father.

Pol Maj Gen Apichit Thianpermpoon, chief of Kalasin police, said police have issued summonses for the two suspects, aged 16 and 17, for questioning over the attempted murder of Sompong Phetprayoon.

Mr Sompong, 60, was attacked at his house in Muang district on the night of July  22 when he went outside to investigate what appeared to be an attempt to steal some of his valuable fighting cocks. He was cut and stabbed several times and left for dead. No roosters or other items of value were taken.

Mr Sompong sustained severe knife wounds to his head and body, and was rushed to hospital. He needed over 100 stitches.

The 16-year-old son was subsequently detained and confessed to having paid two friends 20,000 baht to kill his father, to avenge alleged frequent beatings and reprimands he had suffered since early childhood.

He had another quarrel with his father shortly before he  approached his two friends and offered them money to kill him.

Mr Sompong was still under close medical care but no longer in danger of dying, Pol Maj Gen Apichit said. Police would question him when he was better recovered.

Pol Lt Col Suthep Phukanha, a deputy investigation chief at Muang police station, said the two teen suspects had been summonsed for questioning and to acknowledge charges of colluding in attempted murder.

The duo had  reportedly fled their homes after the attack. Police would ask their parents in for questioning, Pol Lt Col Suthep said.

Investigators would ask the provincial Juvenile and Family Court to approve arrest warrants for the two youths if they failed to answer the police summons.

A prosecutor, a social worker, a psychologist and the parents would be present during the questioning of the 16-year-old alleged mastermind of the crime.

The youth would face a charge of attempted murder of his father, Pol Lt Col Suthep said.
