CHAI NAT - A 27-year-old man has been arrested for shooting dead his father in a jealous fit because he thought he was having a sexual affair with his teenage wife.

Subin Pansuang was caught on the Chai Nat-Takhli Road in Takhli district of neighbouring Nakhon Sawan province by a team of police and soldiers while riding a motorcycle on Wednesday evening, Thai media reported on Thursday.

The suspect was wanted for  killing his father Thongbai at their house in tambon Huay Krot Pattana in Sankhaburi district of Chai Nat on Tuesday evening following a heated quarrel. He suspected his father was having sexual relations with his 18-year-old wife Suthiporn Seeda.

Thonbai, 53, was resting in a hammock at his house when his son allegedly walked up and shot him in the chest at close range with a shotgun. Mr Subin then allegedly aimed the gun at his wife, but she ran off to seek help from neighbours. He then fled.

After being arrested, the suspect took police to dense grass near a temple in Sankhaburi district where he had dumped the shotgun he said was used for the crime.

Mr Subin confessed, according to police.

The suspect said he bought the shotgun and four cartridges for 3,000 baht from a friend. He took amphetamine and drank beer before quarrelling with his father.

The suspect apologised to his wife and asked that she take care of their child.

Police on Thursday morning took him for a crime re-enactment at the house, when about 200 angry neighbours gathered and put a curse on the suspect for killing his father. About 50 police and soldiers were deployed to keep the peace.

Mr Subin was held in custody at Sankhaburi police station on charges of murder, attempted murder and illegal possession of a weapon.
