Government adopts US trafficking 'suggestions'

The government has accepted suggestions on human trafficking made by the US in the hope it will upgrade the country back to Tier 2 in the 2017 Trafficking in Persons (TIP) report.

Speaking after a meeting Monday, Maitree Intusut, permanent secretary for Social Development and Human Security said officials are studying 17 suggestions on human trafficking which the US has sent to the government.

The US put Thailand on a Tier 2 watchlist in its latest report, after being downgraded to the lowest level, Tier 3, in 2014. Held at Government House, the meeting was chaired by Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Prawit Wongsuwon.

Some of the US suggestions are to punish severely any officials found guilty of human trafficking-related offences; to strictly enforce legal actions against people convicted of human trafficking and seek cooperation from the public in the suppression of human trafficking, according to Mr Maitree.

Other suggestions include investing in equipment and tools to be used in investigating processes; and increasing the roles of inspectors providing help for victims of human trafficking.
