PHUKET - A Chinese man was hit by a car and killed when crossing a road late at night to buy souvenirs, after his bus stopped on the way to the airport where he was to catch a flight home.

The accident occurred in Thalang district on the main road opposite a PTT petrol station in Ban Muang Mai area around 11pm on Tuesday, Pol Lt Col Sanit Nookhong, investigation chief at Thalang police station, said on Wednesday.

The body of Lu Shengbin, 55, was lying on the side of Thep Krasattri Road, surrounded by a group of crying Chinese tourists, when police arrived, Thai media reported.

A Volvo car with a Bangkok licence plate was parked nearby. The left side of the windshield was shattered and blood-stained.

Lu had been travelling in a bus with other Chinese tourists from a hotel on Patong beach in Kathu district to Krabi international airport to board a flight back home, police said.

The bus stopped on the roadside to allow the tourists to buy goods at shops in the petrol station area on the opposite side of the road. Other tourists had already crossed the road. Lu was the last person to leave the bus.

As he was crossing the road he was hit by the Volvo, which was heading to downtown Phuket, police said.

The investigation was continuing.
