CHON BURI - An Australian tourist was found dead after allegedly jumping from a condominium in Pattaya town in the early hours of Wednesday shortly after bidding farewell to friends.

The 59-year-old man, whose name was withheld pending notification of relatives, was found lying in a pool of blood near the swimming pool of the 15-storey Kao Karat condominium on Soi Arunothai in tambon Nong Phreu of Bang Lamung district, said Pattaya police, who were reported around 12.30am on Wednesday.

The tourist suffered a fractured skull and broken limbs, said police.

The incident frightened Thais and foreigners sitting at the swimming pool.

An Australian friend of his, who declined to be named, allegedly told police the man had had drinks with him and his Thai girlfriend before the incident. He later bid farewell, saying he would leave for Australia on Wednesday, said the friend.

Police initially assumed that stress might have driven the tourist to take his own life. His body would be sent to a forensic institute for a post-mortem examination to establish the cause of his death.
