PRACHIN BURI - A year-old girl was fatally wounded and her grandmother's hand blown off by a home-made bomb the young tot found in an unused room at their home in Si Maha Phot district on Wednesday morning.

The tragic incident occured at the single-storey house of Jamnian Budda, the 39-year-old grandmother, in Ban Nong Sa-nguan village of tambon Tha Toom about 10.30am.

Pol Capt Jakrapol Jaichuam of Si Maha Phot station, said Ms Jamnian saw her little grandchild, Thidarat Sang-ondee, playing with a tape-wrapped object she found in an empty guestroom. She was trying to take off the adhesive tape.

The grandmother tried to take the object from the girl, but it fell to the floor and exploded.

The girl's 20-year-old mother was just arriving home from work when the explosion occurred.

Ms Jamnian and the toddler were rushed to hospital, where the child succumbed to her injuries.

Pol Lt Thewan Phumthan, an explosives ordnance officer from Prachin Buri station, said the object contained an explosive along with chopped steel rods and nails wrapped up with adhesive tape.

The unused bedroom had previously belonged to Thidarat's 19-year-old uncle, Nakharin Budda, but he had moved out when he got married.

Pol Lt Thewan said the bomb might belong to Mr Nakharin's friend, who had stayed in the bedroom.
