Cameras, cell tower vandalised

Several CCTV cameras and a cell site in Pattani have been attacked over the past two days.

In Muang district, police were alerted to a fire at an AIS cell phone tower on Pattani-Yala road in Ban Saning of tambon Baraho at 1.10 am yesterday.

Burned cloth was found at the tower base with the smell of benzene, officers said. Cable lines and signal transmitters were destroyed by the fire.

Police say the culprits destroyed the tower fence's lock and set fire to the tower using benzene. The attack caused an AIS cellphone signal blackout around the area.

In Yarang district, two CCTV cameras attached to a utility pole at a junction in tambon Prajan were brought down and smashed yesterday, according to the officers.

They said two Interior Ministry CCTV cameras were also torched in tambon Yarang on Tuesday morning.

The devices were installed on a pole opposite tambon Yarang municipality office.

The attack was carried out by two perpetrators who arrived at the scene on a motorcycle, officers said.

They set fire to a tyre hanging on the pole, causing the cable lines to snap and damage to the cameras. Insurgents are believed to be behind the attacks.
