4,000 bullets found dumped in Phatthalung canal

PHATTHALUNG - More than 4,000 bullets were found in sacks dumped in a canal in Muang district by local residents collecting freshwater snails on Wednesday.

Nikhom Yaonoon, kamnan of tambon Chaiburi, said a team of divers would be asked to help with the search of Khlong Ban Ai canal today for any more ammunition that might be in there.

He spoke after leading villagers to hand over 3 sacks containing 4,020 bullet rounds to Phatthalung police chief Wichai Wichayanaruepol late on Wednesday night.

The 3 sacks were found by residents collecting snails in the canal on Wednesday afternoon, Thai media reported on Thursday.

Pol Col Wichai said this type of ammunition was mostly used in the deep South. He believed the bullets had been dumped into the canal during a joint police-military crackdown on illegal weapons.

Investigators would try to find who was responsible, he said

The media reports did not say what kind of ammunition.
