Woman wants probe for B440,000 phone bill

The telecom regulator said on Monday it is investigating a complaint by a Thai woman working in the Philippines who got a hefty phone bill from DTAC, the country's second-largest mobile operator, although she denied using the service.

Jongjit Yooprai, of Mukdahan, asked her father, Mr Prasong, to file a complaint with the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) for her after Mukdahan Provincial Court ordered her to pay two overdue phone bills totalling 438,853 baht.

The bills were in the name of DTAC TriNet, a subsidiary of DTAC, and covered two phone numbers. The order was sent to her at the registered family home.

In her complaint, released to the media on Monday by NBTC secretary-general Takorn Tantasith, Ms Jongjit claimed she has been working in the Philippines and never was registered as a user of DTAC TriNet. She asked the NBTC to investigate how she had been hit with the pricey bills and to provide her with legal aid to fight the charges

Her family also asked local police to record the incident in the police blotter.

Mr Takorn said DTAC had replied on Monday. The company said Ms Jongjit had registered as a customer at its outlet in The Mall Bang Kapi shopping centre in Bangkok on May 31, 2014. The registration procedures were carried out in accordance with the NBTC regulations.

DTAC said charges were compiled on actual phone calls made inside the Philippines and included international calls made from that country to Thailand. It has provided details of the calls.

Mr Takorn said the NBTC will call DTAC representatives for an inquiry. He claimed the NBTC will ensure justice for both sides.
