Ford motor company has agreed to buy back "defective" cars from about 100 dissatisfied buyers at a fair price if it fails to repair their vehicles following a protest near Government House on Wednesday.

The automobile maker's angry customers parked their Ford Fiesta and Ford Focus cars at the Royal Turf Club near Government House and then filed petitions with the government's public complaints centre about the continuing problems they have experienced with the transmission systems.

They also filed a request at the United States embassy, asking that Ford headquarters check the service provided by its local branch.

The local branch later stated that it did not send a representative to meet the customers at the complaints centre.

"With the Office of the Consumer Protection Board (OCPB) as mediator, we have been working with this small group of customers in good faith to try and resolve their respective situations," it said.

"Despite initiating the OCPB's mediation, this group has now refused an OCPB proposal to allow Ford the opportunity to fix the respective issues within six months.

"If the issues remain after this period, Ford would be obligated to buy back their vehicles at a fair market price provided by the OCPB," the company stated.

It previously extended warranties and reimbursed customers who had paid for the repairs, it said.
