Car slams into motorbike racers, killing 1, injuring 13

PHITSANULOK -- A 16-year-old boy was killed and 13 other teenagers injured after a car ploughed into a group of motorcycle racers who were gathering on one side of a road in Muang district early Sunday, police said.

Pol Lt Col Rakthin Bamrungsri, an investigator at Naresuan University police station, said the incident occurred at about 1.30am on Phitsanulok-Bang Krathum road in front of a waste recycling plant.

The officer said a group of young men and women were gathering on one side of the road in front of the recycling plant with their motorcycles, preparing to race. A car travelling along the road ploughed into the group before overturning in a roadside ditch.

Narathip Kwaenkrathum, 16, was killed at the scene. Thirteen others, 10 young men and three young women, were injured.

Police rushed to the scene to maintain order while the injured were admitted to hospital by rescuers from a charity foundation.

The car's driver, identified later as Thanapong Sukmee, 25, and his girlfriend, were injured and admitted to a hospital.

Mr Thanapong said he was driving home from Uttaradit province with his girlfriend when he slammed into the group of motorbike racers. He admitted he was drowsy and did not see the group, blaming it on poor lighting.
