PHUKET — Yaowarat Road in the popular Phuket Old Town has joined other major roads in having unsightly overhead power lines and cables buried underground.

The Provincial Electricity Authority on Sunday finished pulling down 33,000 volt electrical poles on the road from Suriyadej Traffic Circle (Fountain Circle) to an intersection with Deebuk Road, covering 800 metres, in Muang Phuket district, PEA public relations officer Somchai Sitthipong said.

The work, which is costing 108 million baht, includes improved electrical, telephone, telecommunications, water and infrastructure systems for PEA, TOT, CAT Telecom and the Phuket Town Municipality.

It is part of the third phrase of the underground utility wires development project in Phuket's old town, popular for its Sino-Portuguese buildings, food and tourist attractions. The scheme aimed at improving the beauty of the international tourism city began on Thalang Road in 2009 by the PEA and the Phuket municipality.

The agencies have so far completed construction of underground power lines and utility cable facilities on Thalang Road, Soi Rommanee, Krabi Road, Deebuk Road,Thepkrasattri Road and Phuket Road. Officials will continue the work on Rassada, Phang Nga and Ranong roads in the third phrase.
