The Commerce Ministry has been ordered to ensure the quality of Thai food served at restaurants worldwide is of the same standards.

The instruction came straight from Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, media reports said.

To achieve this goal, the Commerce Ministry is working with the Foreign Affairs, Agriculture and Cooperatives and Industry ministries and other agencies in the promotion of Thai food throughout the world.

The Industry Ministry has identified about 20,000 Thai food restaurants in service worldwide and has instituted a programme to ensure they maiontain the same high quality standards to maintain the identity of Thai food.

The ministry's National Food Institute has also set standards for 11 kinds of Thai dishes - including som tam, pad thai and tom yam kung - and two kinds of sweet for all Thai restaurants abroad to follow.

A previous government also tried to standardise Thai food. It ordered the National Innovation Agency of the Science and Technology Ministry to set up a centre to ensure Thai food served worldwide was all of high standard, after learning  that many dishes had been altered from the original recipes.

The NIA issued standardised recipes for several dishes in 2013, to be followed worldwide.
