Two Chiang Mai districts warned of flash floods

CHIANG MAI - People in San Kamphaeng and Mae Chaem districts of Chiang Mai province have been warned of possible flash floods following heavy rain last night.

In San Kamphaeng district, water in Mae On overflowed to flood villages and farmland on both sides of the stream.

Pairin Limcharoen, chief of the Chiang Mai disaster prevention and mitigation office, said he had instructed staff in San Kamphaeng district to prepare 15,000 sandbags for distribution to residents to build flood walls to protect their property.

In Mae Chaem district, water in Mae Chaem stream had overflowed the banks to inundate villages in tambon Mae Na Chorn. The water level in Mae Chaem stream was 3.66 metres high as of Monday morning; the critical level is 4.10 metres.

In Mae Hong Son province, water in Pang Ma Pha and Pai district had receded to a normal level.

Suwapong Kitipatpiboon, deputy Mae Hong Son governor, yesterday led officials to Sop Pong, Tham Lod, and Muang Phae villages in tambon Tham Loe to distribute bags of survival gear to flood-hit villagers.

A house in Sop Pong village, built on a mountain slope, had been completely destroyed by a mudslide.

About 1,000 rai of farmland, 25 weirs and two bridges in Pang Ma Pha and Pai districts had been severely damaged.
