Mahidol University has maintained its status as the best university in Thailand in this year's Times Higher Education World rankings.

The rankings on Thai higher educational institutes largely remained the same as last year with two more universities -- King Mongkut's Institute of Technology Ladkrabang (KMITL) and Kasetsart University -- added to the list.

The results released on Wednesday showed Mahidol in a group of tertiary institutions ranging between 501 and 600, while four others -- Chiang Mai University, Chulalongkorn University, King Mongkut's University of Technology Thonburi and Suranaree University of Technology -- were grouped in another range between 601 and 800.

Kasetsart University, Khon Kaen University, KMITL and Prince of Songkhla University stayed in a lower range from 801 or more.

The survey did not give the exact position for low-ranking universities and instead placed them in groups.

Mahidol was second after Chulalongkorn in another survey by the QS World University Rankings early this month.

University of Oxford was rated the best by the Times Higher Education this year, unseating California Institute of Technology.

The National University of Singapore cemented its position as the best in Asia at 24, up from 26 last year. It was rated the best in Southeast Asia by QS this year.
