Police and rescue workers were called to the port around 7.20pm, Thai media reported on Friday.

Ammonia leaked from the South Korea-flagged Pharostar fishing trawler, moored at the port. Workers fled in panic as the pungent gas spread. Eleven people who fell ill after inhaling it were evacuated from the vessel by fellow workers.

The 11 workers were four Thais,  two women and two men, and seven migrant workers, four men and three women. One of them was still unconscious.

Somsak Chiantakhu, 50, a security guard at the port, said the fishing trawler had arrived on Sept 19.

Ammonia began leaking from it around 7.15pm on Thursday. He immediately alerted  rescue workers.

Police were investigating.
