Driver suspended, fined after packing public van

The driver of a public van was temporarily banned from taking the wheel and fined for overloading the vehicle.

The No. 552 public van running between Suvarnabhumi airport and Samut Prakan can take only 14 passengers but Senee Ngampaeng was found adding seven more on Wednesday, forcing the new passengers to stand inside the vehicle.

The sardine-like van, which runs under the concession of the Bangkok Mass Transit Authority, was in a video clip apparently filmed by one of the commuters on that day. "The van was full but the driver still stopped to take more passengers," @Tikky Ing Ing, who posted the clip on her Facebook account, wrote.

The clip was later shared in social media and prompted the Land Transport Department to take action.

Mr Senee was summoned to the department on Friday and he admitted taking passengers beyond the limit.

Department director-general Sanit Promwong said the driver was suspended from driving the vehicle for 90 days and fined 5,000 baht for violating public land transport regulations.

He was also ordered to undertake training courses on the safety of passengers on public vehicles, the official added.
