Fire guts Maha Sarakham grocery store

MAHA SARAKHAM -- A fire broke out at a large grocery store in Chiang Yuen district of this northeastern province on Sunday morning. The damage was estimated at 45 million baht. No casualties were reported.

According to media reports, police said the fire started at about 4am at Srisamorn Superstore, the largest grocery store occupying a large building with 11 shop fronts, near a fresh market of tambon Chiang Yuen.

Walaiporn Srinil, the store's owner, said the building stored various kinds of groceries including all kinds of drinks and some firecrackers, which were intended to be sold during the end of the Buddhist Lent.

The fire spread quickly to engulf the entire building and loud noises of explosion were heard more than 10 kilometres away before the entire building crumbled.

There were no casualties.  The damage was estimated at 45 million baht.

Pol Lt Col Sayan Kaewnisai, a Chiang Yuen police investigator, said the cause of the fire was being investigated.
