The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration said on Sunday it has completed the environmental impact assessment report on the “Grey Line” monorail project linking Watcharapol and Tha Phra via Rama IX Bridge.

Taweesak Lertpraphan, director of the BMA's Traffic and Transport Department, said the EIA report would be submitted to the National Environment Board soon.

He said the 39.91-kilometre monorail system would help ease traffic congestion in the capital as it would connect with six other electric rail lines.

The first phase of the construction, which runs between Watcharapol and Thong Lor, with a total length of 16.25km, will require an investment of 27-30 billion baht. It will take about three years to complete.

The development was likely to take the form of a public-private partnership (PPP) investment.

The second phase runs between Phra Khanong and Rama III, with a total length of 12.17km. The third phase spans Rama III to Tha Phra, with a total length of 11.49km.

The route, which connects communities between the centre of the city and the southern suburbs, is expected to serve the needs of about 140,000 commuters daily.
