Pattaya police are planning to set up a substation on Koh Larn to serve visitors after several incidents had affected tourism on the famous resort island.

Pattaya police chief Pol Col Apchai Krobpetch said an operations centre will offer quick help to tourists. He did not give a timeline for the initiative as police will consult with local administrations first.

Koh Larn off Pattaya is a popular beach destination for locals and tourists, but a recent spate of accidents and incidents involving foreign visitors has damaged the reputation of the island.

The latest case involved a jet ski rental worker, Rattana Harit, who is accused of sexually harassing a Japanese tourist on Saturday. Police arrested him a day later after the tourist filed a complaint at the Pattaya station.

Mr Rattana has denied the rape charge, saying the sexual encounter involved mutual consent. He will fight the case in court.

On Wednesday, police and soldiers held talks with operators of all boats, reminding them to keep control of their staff, especially when it involves female tourists.

Pol Col Trairong Phiewpun, deputy chief of Chon Buri police, warned of harsh action against anyone who damages tourism in Pattaya including the island.
