CHON BURI - Authorities in Pattaya say they are inspecting a huge amount of rubbish that washed up on the resort city's main beach on Wednesday night.

Teams from the city’s Public Health Bureau led by Lamduan Taechaso descended on the beach from North Pattaya to Central Pattaya Intersection on Thursday morning to collect a huge amount of trash, including plastic bags, plastic bottles, styrofoam food containers, water hyacinth, wood scraps and other debris, that had washed up on the beach.

Officials are working to clear all the garbage from the beach. Mrs Lamduan said the phenomenon occurs every year between September and November when monsoonal winds and tides in the Gulf of Thailand from Chachoengsao province blow toward the city's beach, bringing undersea pollution ashore.

However, she said the bureau would investigate the origin of the trash and conduct a thorough inspection to locate the source.

The incident occurred as officials are trying to solve the garbage problem on Koh Larn, the popular tourist island off the Pattaya coast.

Koh Larn residents have complained that local officials have failed to tackle the long-standing problems because of limited manpower and funds.
