Nok Air pins delays on bad weather

Nok Air claims delays to its flights at many airports last week were caused by bad weather, citing the need to comply with international aviation safety standards.

The airline yesterday issued an announcement, apologising to passengers for the delays between Sept 26 and Sunday.

According to the announcement, technical difficulties prompted air traffic control officials to postpone flights for safety reasons.

Poor weather resulting from continuous heavy rains over the past week had prevented its flights from taking off and landing, the announcement said.

The airline said it was required to comply strictly with international aviation safety standards.

Nok Air is one of several Thai-registered airlines which has had problems with persistent flight delays. In February, the airline faced a severe shortage of pilots which led to a pilot strike amid accusations that pilots were forced to exceed standard flying hours.

The shortage appeared to recur last month.

Nok Air is also required to go through a re-inspection of its Air Operator Certificate after the International Civil Aviation Organisation in June last year issued a "red flag" that indicated significant safety concerns for Thai aviation.

On Monday, Transport Minister Arkhom Termpittayapaisith warned the airlines with troubled flight schedules, including Nok Air, and ordered them to improve their operations.

The transport minister yesterday ordered the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT) to hold talks with airline representatives over flight operation standards and delays.

He also asked the CAAT to ensure that airlines have aviation maintenance technicians standing by to immediately clear up any technical problems.

Mr Arkhom also urged airlines with insufficient pilots to quickly resolve the issue, saying airlines have been allowed to hire foreign pilots since last year.
