Fire gutted nearly a quarter of the century-old Bang Luang market in tambon Bang Luang of Bang Len district, Nakhon Pathom, on Wednesday morning, but no one was injured.

The blaze started at the market, which comprises about 130 two-storey wooden shophouses packed closely together, about 9.45am.

It destroyed about 30 shophouses facing each other across a narrow alley.

Thirty fire engines and crews took more than two hours to control the flames. Police are investigating the cause of the fire.

Nakhon Pathom governor Adisak Thep-art said two help centres had been set up for the victims. Those who lost their property would stay at Wat Bang Luang. Damage costs were still being estimated, he said.

Local authorities have promoted the 113-year-old Bang Luang market near the Tha Chin River as a historical and conservation destination for weekend tourists. It has also been a filming location for many TV series.
