Baht holds gain after death of the King

The baht held its gains after the Royal Household Bureau announced His Majesty the King, the world’s longest reigning monarch, had died at the age of 88.

The baht rose 0.2% to 35.648 to the dollar as of 6.59pm, compared with its level at 5pm on Wednesday in New York. Stocks, bonds and the currency dropped this week after the bureau said Sunday that the King’s health was “unstable”.

The monarch has been a symbol of unity in Thailand for 70 years, during which the country experienced 10 coups.

#LongLiveTheKing was the top trending topic on Twitter in Thailand Wednesday, with more than 240,000 tweets depicting the monarch at various stages of his life.
