Thai education service to set up Cambodian branch

Private tutoring company OnDemand Education plans to set up a branch in Cambodia by next year to help middle-class parents prepare their children to get into a respected university.

Cambodia's growing middle class is familiar with Thai language and culture through TV shows and can now fund their children's studies abroad, including in Thailand, said chief executive Sathorn Upanwan.

Regulations in Cambodia now allow international schools and foreign tutoring institutions to set up schools there, he said.

OnDemand is seeking partners to do business in Cambodia.

The curriculum for Cambodian students will be taught in Cambodian and English using OnDemand's specially designed curriculum.

"Parents in Cambodia have similar goals to those of Thai parents, especially wealthy people who want to see their children be well educated," Mr Sathorn said. "It gives them [the children] a chance to get a good job."

Mr Sathorn said OnDemand is also conducting a feasibility study into establishing a branch in Myanmar.

With Thailand facing a declining birth rate and the number of one-child families on the rise, primary and secondary schools offering English programmes are increasingly a priority for parents who can afford such an education for their children, he explained.

Mr Sathorn said the competition between academic tutoring centres has become more intense this year. They are changing their marketing direction to improve their learning methodologies and give them an edge.

''For instance, the international curriculum has gained a lot of popularity among students seeking university admission,'' he said.

"So several academic tutoring centres are increasingly offering an international curriculum."

The growing popularity of international school curriculums led OnDemand to offer its first curriculum in March. The course has had positive feedback from students so far.

The international curriculum is now offered at two OnDemand branches in Thailand.

It aims to expand international courses from the fourth quarter to be available at all branches in Thailand by next year, said Mr Sathorn.

OnDemand's revenue for the first eight months of this year grew 20% from the same period last year.

The company has 600,000 students enrolled.

Each year 70,000 more students take courses with OnDemand, with 5-10% enrolled in the international and elementary school curriculums.
