Dangerous jellyfish found along Krabi

Visitors to the Andaman Sea are being warned of potentially deadly Portuguese man-of-war jellyfish, also known as blue bottles, after more were swept ashore on Krabi beaches.

Sarayuth Tanthian, head of the Hat Nopparat Thara National Park-Phi Phi archipelago in Krabi province, said park officers found more blue bottles on beaches on Maya Bay and Phi Phi Island yesterday morning after some turned up earlier on major beaches in the southern province. Swimming in the sea has been prohibited, he said, adding bans were being issued on other islands.

Blue bottles were yesterday reported along Maya Bay, Phi Phi Le Island, Po Da Island and Phai Island, he said. Physical contact with a blue bottle's venom could sometimes be deadly though in most cases they leave swimmers with a nasty sting, he said. In the event of exposure, one should use plenty of seawater and see a doctor, he said.
