SURAT THANI - Twenty van operators are pooling their resources to give low-income mourners a free return trip to Bangkok to pay their respects to the late King Bhumibol at the Grand Palace.

The operators, led by Khanthong Satsanas, have 10-seat VIP vans. They are offering a free-of-charge shuttle service for 200 low-income earners from Surat Thani to the Grand Palace.

Mr Khanthong, 32, said most Thais wanted to pay their respects to the beloved King. Poor people were no different, but they could not afford the cost of the trip.

Van operators from Ratchapreuk, Siripak Hiace Surat Thani, Kae Kai Van Surat, Khru Ood and Na Sert groups had joined hands to do a good deed  as a tribute to the late King.

The vans will leave for Bangkok at 4pm on Nov 1 and return to Surat Thani on Nov 2. He said people could register their names on Saturday at the provincial hall’s canteen from 10am-4pm.

If more than 200 poeple sign up for the trip, his team would arrange one more trip, he said. He urged other van operators to join this volunteer activity.
