SURIN — More than 40 street racers were arrested and their illegally modified motorcycles seized in Muang district late on Thursday night.

A combined team of 100 police, soldiers and local officials rounded up the racers on a road in Muang district and arrested 43 before they could flee, mostly youths below 18 years, and seized 43 bikes from them.

The raid followed complaints that street racers, known as dek waenz after the shrill noise their souped-up  engines make, had turned streets into racing tracks, causing a public nuisance and posing danger for other road users.

Pol Maj Gen Korkiat Wongsumet, acting chief of Surin police, said on Friday they would examine the seized motorcycles and put the racers' names and their offences on record. Parents of the racers would be called in to acknowledge the misconduct of their children.
