Parking deadline looms for van drivers

Authorities have given drivers of inter-provincial public vans until Tuesday to pick up and drop off passengers at the three main bus terminals, or be hit with tough legal action.

Transport Co deputy managing director Nopparat Karunyawanich said operators of public vans must bring their vehicle to the bus terminals at Mor Chit 2, Ekamai and Sai Tai Mai by Tuesday.

The deadline follows a push by the government to enforce the law in regulating where public vans pick up and drop off customers.

Many vans park in busy spots often without permission, causing traffic congestion and snarl-ups.

Mr Nopparat said van operators are also barred from selling tickets outside the terminals.

Failure to comply with these rules will incur swift legal action, he said.

Operators bringing their vans to the terminals must have with them their driver's licence and van registration papers issued by the state-run Transport Co Ltd. The documents are needed to secure a parking time. The parking time slots are useful for safety regulation, Mr Nopparat said.

He added that shuttle buses are available to transport passengers to inter-provincial public vans at the three bus terminals, from Victory Monument to Mor Chit 2, from the BTS Skytrain stop in Chatuchak to Mor Chit 2, from Victory Monument to Ekamai, and from the Victory Monument to Pin Klao close to Sai Tai Mai.

He said the frequency of the shuttle bus service will be adjusted according to demand from passengers.
