Tanongsak Saensomboonsuk, the first Thai to win a top tier men’s singles badminton title, arrived home on Tuesday morning and announced he was dedicating his new trophy to the late King Bhumibol, a great patron of the sport.

The 26-year-old champion, known as Song, arrived on flight TG 951 and was warmly greeted by family and supporters at Suvarnabhumi airport.

The World No.18 said it came as a shock to learn of the King’s passing on Oct 13, just as the competition was beginning. It was the saddest possible news.

Although devastated, he determined to do his best for his country and King Bhumibol. Tanongsak then had the biggest win of his career and walked off with Denmark Open men's title on Sunday.

“Every time I went out to compete my thoughts were always with the King. The award I received, both the medal and trophy, will be dedicated to the beloved monarch," he said.

"After receiving the award, I placed the trophy on the floor because it is not as important as the portrait of the King.

To show my gratitude to him, I will practice hard and do my best in my sporting career,’’ the country's top male shuttler said.

He earned US$52,500 (approximately 1.8 million baht) in prize money.
