Pheu Thai top brass fly to meet Thaksin

Ousted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra has told Pheu Thai Party members to consider forming a backup party to contest the next election, party sources said yesterday.

He made the suggestion when about 10 regional party leaders flew to Dubai, in the UAE, to meet the former premier at the weekend, the sources said.

They included Thaksin's sister Yaowapa Wongsawat, who is the party leader in the North, and Khunying Sudarat Keyuraphan, a key figure in Bangkok.

The group discussed the political situation in which Thaksin predicted that the political climate would improve and asked members and former party MPs to prepare for a general election, which the former prime minister believed would not be long in coming.

Thaksin also instructed the party to come up with strategies that would conform with new rules laid out by the new constitution. The former premier expressed confidence that Pheu Thai would win the poll and form a government, the sources said.

They said the meeting was sought because the key regional figures wanted to clear the air over who actually leads the party. No indication was given as to who would head the party, the sources added.

The meeting coincided with the Constitution Drafting Committee denying claims it had been ordered to overhaul membership of political parties which could result in problems for existing players.
