Fire guts coconut fibre factory in Chumphon

CHUMPHON - A fire destroyed a coconut fibre factory in Lang Suan district in the early hours of Friday, with damage estimated at 2 million baht.

The fire began at the Kwangthai Samrung factory in tambon Bang Maphrao around 4am on Friday.

Pol Maj Witthaya Sapprasan, chief investigator at Pak Nam Lang Suan police station, said the flames spread quickly through the many tonnes of coconut fibre stored on the premises.  Fire trucks and  crews took several hours to put out the flames.  Nobody was injured.

Chutharat Kornwongwan, 26, a clerk at the factory, was the first to notice the fire and immediately reported it to police.

An initial inspection revealed the fire destroyed or damaged 14 tonnes of bleached and compressed coconut fibre and another 40 tonnes of fibre that were awaiting the bleaching process. Some machinery was also damaged.  Damage was estimated to be at least 2 million baht.

Police thought an electrical short circuit might have caused the fire. They were investigating.
