Thailand-born Tammy Duckworth elected to US Senate

CHICAGO - Bangkok-born Congresswoman Tammy Duckworth easily won a seat in the US Senate in Tuesday's election.

The Thai-speaking Ms Duckworth, daughter of a Thai mother and American father, is known as an Iraq war combat hero, who lost both legs in the crash of her helicopter.

She visited Thailand after her election to the House of Representatives in 2012.

She is a member of the Democratic Party and a strong supporter of Hillary Clinton for president.

She easily won election with two-thirds of the vote in Illinois over Republican Mark Kirk.
