No Thai nationals have been reported hurt by the 7.3 magnitude earthquake that struck northeastern Japan early on Tuesday.

Foreign Minister Don Pramudwinai said he had not received any reports of casualties. Most Thai people in Japan live in towns outside the affected area, the minister said.

The strong earthquake hit northeastern Japan early on Tuesday, with the country's meteorological agency issuing a tsunami warning for the region's coast, including Fukushima prefecture.

Fukushima is home to the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, the site of a nuclear disaster following an earthquake and tsunami in 2011. The highly radioactive plant is still in the process of being decommissioned.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said the quake struck around 6am (4am Thailand time) at a depth of 10 kilometres. People along the coast were warned to move to higher ground but there were no reports of large tsunami waves pounding the shoreline.
