Walk free, eat free in Chinatown on Saturday

Streets in Bangkok's Chinatown, the Yaowarat area, will be closed to traffic all day Saturday for activities to honour His Majesty the late King Bhumibol that will include free handouts of the famous local foods for visitors.

Traffic police announced the road closures would last from midnight Friday until midnight Saturday.

It applies to Yaowarat Road from the Chinese Gate to an intersection with Lamphun Chai Road,  Tri Mit Road from the Chinese Gate to the intersection with Song Wat Road, and  Charoen Phanit Road from the Chinese Gate to the intersection with Song Wat Road.  

Highlights of the event, organised by the Thai-Chinese Chamber of Commerce,  are scheduled between 4pm and 7pm on Saturday and will include prayers, performances of the late King's compositions, the singing of the royal anthem, a candlelight mourning ceremony, and a photo exhibition featuring past visits to Chinatown by King Rama VIII and King Rama IX.

Afterwards about 200 restaurants will give away about 100,000 sets of Yaowarat's famous foods to visitors. Authorities expect about 100,000 people there.
