Famous songwriter Chongrak dies at 78

Singer and songwriter Chongrak Chankana died at Chularat 3 Hospital in Bang Phli district of Samut Prakan province early on Monday. He was 78.

He was a son of Chuangchan Chankana, better known under his pseudonym "Phran Boon", also a famous songwriter and composer.

Napassawan Chankana, his daughter, said Chongrak had suffered from diabetes, high blood pressure and a blood infection.  He was admitted to intensive care at Chularat 3 Hospital on Saturday after complaining of chest pains.

Chongrak was pronounced dead at 12.26am on Monday.

Ms Napassawan said he was a model father and she was proud of his achievements. He wrote more than 5,000 songs in his lifetime.

His best known songs include "Chong Rak", "Kao Lan Yod Nam Ta",  "Khon Phikan Rak", "Khuen Thoraman" and "Thanandorn Rak".

Chongrak was royally bestowed with a golden record award for the song "Muan Khon La Fak Fa".

Songs written by him were sung by many popular singers, such as Suthep Wongkhamhaeng, Sawalee Phakaphan, Thanongsak Phakdithewa, Thanin Intarathep, Charam Thepchai, Daojai Paijit, Rungrudee Paengpongsai, Thippawan Pinphiban and Umaporn Buaphueng.
