Driver dies in oil tanker fireball

UTTARADIT -- The driver of oil truck was killed when it overturned and exploded in a giant fireball in Tron district early on Thursday, police said.

Pol Lt Col Prinya Nakwisut, an investigator at Tron police station, said the accident occurred about 5.13am on Highway 1 (Uttaradit-Phitsanulok) between kilometre markers 281-282 near Moo 10 village in tambon Nam Ang.

The tanker truck caught fire after it overturned on a downhill section of the highway.The driver, Kittichai Atchumpolrat, 37, was trapped inside and died in the flames.

Rescuers took about an hour to put out the fire.

Police were investigating the cause of the accident.  It was believed the driver was not familiar with the route.  A similar accident occurred at the same spot a few months ago, also involving a fuel tanker, causing some casualties.
