Regent, PM, courts, NLA chiefs to meet Crown Prince tonight

Gen Prem Tinsulanonda, the regent, will lead the heads of the country's three executive bodies to an audience with His Royal Highness Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn on Wednesday at 6.30pm at Ambara Villa, Dusit Palace.

They are Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha, the prime minister, Pornpetch Wichitcholachai, chairman of the National Legislative Assembly (NLA), and Veerapol Tungsuwan, president of the Supreme Court.

At the audience, Mr Pornpetch is expected to formally invite the Crown Prince to ascend the throne as the 10th King of the Chakri Dynasty.

Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwon on Wednesday said the Crown Prince has agreed to become the new King, pending an official invitation.

Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Krea-ngam said earlier the NLA president would make a public announcement after he had an audience with the Crown Prince and His Royal Highness had accepted the official invitation to reign.

The process of inviting the Crown Prince to be the new King began on Nov 29 when the NLA acknowledged His Royal Highness as heir to the throne.

That followed a special meeting of the cabinet and the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) on Tuesday morning to initiate the royal succession process following the passing of King Bhumibol Adulyadej on Oct 13.
