Frenchman falls to death at Pattaya shopping mall

CHON BURI - An elderly man fell to his death after climbing over a glass railing on the sixth floor of a shopping centre in Pattaya beach city shortly before closing time on Thursday night

The body of the 71-year-old French tourist came to rest lying face down in front of the escalator on the third floor of the shopping mall in Bang Lamung district, Pattaya police said. The incident was reported around 11.30pm on Thursday.

The dead man's name was withheld pending notification of relatives. 

Witnesses told police he was see walking dejectedly, seemingly agitated, head bent down on the sixth floor of the shopping mall shortly before he fell.

The man suddenly climbed over the glass railing, drawing shouts of warning and alarm from people nearby, and then fell towards the ground below.

His body landed on the floor in front of the escalator on the third floor. He died on the spot.

Police said they would examine security camera footage in the building to clarify details. His body was sent to a forensic institute and the French consulate was informed.

Police are treating his death as suicide.
