People in 10 southern provinces have been urged to be vigilant for severe weather and possible flash floods as heavy rain continues in the South.

The Meteorological Department said on Monday the active low-pressure area over northern parts of Sumatra and the strong northeast monsoon across the South and the Gulf of Thailand  would bring heavy to very heavy rain in many parts of the upper and lower South.

The affected provinces are Chumphon, Krabi, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Phangnga, Phatthalung, Phuket, Ranong, Songkhla and Surat Thani.

Residents in the 10 provinces should be aware of the dangers of torrential rain, flash floods and mountain runoff. They should also avoid travelling through flood-prone areas.

Strong wind waves in the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand are likely to be two to three metres high. All vessels should proceed with caution, while small boats should stay ashore until Tuesday.

People in the Gulf area should also stand ready for inshore surge.

In Surat Thani, Koh Samui and Koh Phangan were placed on the disaster areas list as heavy rain continues to pound the two resort islands and other areas in the region.

In Nakhon Si Thammarat, 23 districts were inundated, affecting 260,000 people and resulting in four deaths, according to Thairath Online.

Also on Monday, authorities announced all trains to the southern region had stopped at Thung Song junction station in Nakhon Si Thammarat after heavy flooding damaged tracks.
